We move together

Easier Journeys

The M5 is a strategic route that carries between 50,000 and 75,000 vehicles every day between the south west and the Midlands. A very busy section of motorway, it carries traffic into Birmingham and is frequently congested.

M5 junctions 4a to 6: Smart Motorway

We’ve upgraded the M5 between junctions 4a (Bromsgrove) and 6 (Worcester) to create a smart motorway with “all lane running”. This means there is no longer a hard shoulder; instead all four lanes are open for traffic to use, providing the extra capacity this section of the M5 needed. If drivers need to stop in an emergency, they’ll be able to use one of the regularly spaced emergency areas.

Journeys have improved on this route through the extra capacity and has reduced congestion, making journey times more reliable.

We have also supported economic development in the region by improving access to business hubs including Birmingham International Airport, the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) and various major freight depots and business centres.
