At Highways England, we celebrate diversity. We make the most of our differences because they make us stronger.

As an organisation, we spend millions of pounds to deliver a road network used by millions of different people. So it’s vital we make decisions that reflect those diverse needs, and build an inclusive organisation. The National Centre for Diversity have given us several awards in recognition of our work influencing inclusion in our industry - including the positive influence we've made on companies across our supply chain. We’ve also helped to develop an online 'Fairness, Inclusion and Respect' toolkit, to promote important values across the construction industry.

Employee engagement

We want the voices of every employee to be heard across the country. So we've introduced tools and forums to help us identify all kinds of equality, diversity and inclusion concerns: from pay and benefits, to progression barriers, to the need for targeted support. We take great care to listen to individual concerns, and to explore potential improvements to the way we work.

Disability Confident Committed

We are proud to have signed up to the government Disability Confident Scheme. As a Disability Confident Committed organisation, we employ and retain people with disabilities and health conditions.

Guaranteed interview scheme

If you have a disability you are guaranteed an interview, so long as you can provide evidence in your application that you meet the minimum criteria for competencies, qualifications, skills and experience.

Reasonable adjustments

If you have a disability, we will make reasonable adjustments that support you to do your role, including each stage of the recruitment process. This might involve changing the time or location of an interview, providing written information in an alternative format, changing the layout or lighting of a room, or providing an interpreter. Staff networks

They work with us to create a diverse and inclusive organisation, and they include:

  • The Leading Women’s network - a forum where women can network, share knowledge, offer support with business challenges and inspire each other to bring about change.
  • The Disability network - for staff with and without disabilities, working together to support each other, share experiences, raise awareness, inform policies and address disability issues.
  • The LGBT network - where people can provide mutual support and raise awareness of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender issues.
  • The BAME network - to celebrate diversity, assist, guide and influence all situations involving Black, Asian, Minorities and Ethnic staff.

The Time to Change Pledge on mental health

Mental health issues can affect any of us and we want to make it easier to talk about mental health. It's why we signed up to the Time to Change Employer Pledge. It's a commitment to examining how we think and act about mental health in the workplace and to making sure that employees facing mental health issues feel supported.
