Learning And Development

So we’ll give you the tools to develop your skills and be better in your role, and we offer learning as diverse as our people to help you find what works for you: from face-to-face workshops to web-based eLearning.


Your career begins with a two-day induction event in Birmingham, where you can meet other new starters and get to know more about Highways England. You'll also have access to important foundation learning that helps you get the most from our business and from yourself. Information, from health and safety to display screen equipment, is all available through our online learning management system Click2Learn. It's regularly updated too, so you’ll always have access to the latest knowledge.

We’ve created learning courses in a variety of types and formats to make learning and development as accessible as possible. We want to provide something for everyone, every role and every aspiration so that you can focus on your priority areas for development.


Bespoke learning

As your career evolves, you might need to gain formal qualifications or carry out specialist training. We’re keen to support you, so if there’s something we don’t offer in-house we'll do our best to source and arrange it. We may even be able to help with funding.


Management Development Programme

We’re very proud of our Management Development Programme. It’s unique to Highways England and helps us to build a culture with safety, integrity, passion, ownership and teamwork at its heart. The Programme is a two day course for all managers, including our CEO and Executive team. The goal is to equip managers with the skills to get the best from you. Through effective and honest conversations about your performance, they’ll help you to excel in your role.
